We used Connected Mathematics 2 for our text book this year in math. It is a different system than the other ones in the past. First of all, it is made up of 8 different units. Right now we have completed 5 of those 8 units; Bits and Pieces I & II, Covering and Surrounding, Shapes and Designs, and Prime Time. Right now, we are studying the unit How Likely Is It? Each unit has four to five different chapters. There are at least four different investigations and each investigation contains four or five different points in them. ACE, or Applications, Connections, and Extensions, is the homework section. We go over the homework on the next day.
We record our homework in our notebook in the section called Notebook Checklist. We also place a check to everything we completed in class on the Notebook Checklist.. In our math binder, we have four sections in the following order; Class work, Homework, Assessment, and Reference. In the Class work section, you put whatever worked on in the class during math. The second section, Homework section, is where you put all of your homework assignments. The third section, Assessment section, is where you put all of your graded pieces. The last section, Referencesection, contains reference papers which you use to help you for the rest of the year. Therefore, whenever we clean out our notebook after finishing a unit, we do not throw them out or give them to the teacher because we keep them in our binder for the rest of the year. Our math binders also contain Vocabulary notebook, math book, pencil pouch, and lab sheets. The Vocabulary notebook contains all the vocabulary words in each unit, in the pencil pouch, we put pencils and other things we need for the rest of the unit, and the lab sheets are papers that helps use with a certain point in that chapter or they help us with homework for that night.
Focus Questions is one major thing at the beginning of each unit and these questions are really important things because they reflect the major mathematical goal(s) of the unit, and they make us curious about what we are going to learn in the unit. Mathematical Highlights is another major thing which is at the beginning of each chapter because the important ideas of the unit is previewed in it, they helps us by telling us how much is left and to follow where we are in the unit.
My favorite unit was Shapes and Designs because we learned about all types of polygons; triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, dodecagon, irregular polygon, etc. We learned about angle sums, angle measures, angle rulers and protractors, tessellation, and we also did a project about shapes, the shapes that we see everyday, angle sums, and etc. another thing we learned about was why triangles are so stable and are the best shape to build structures. We learned about types of angles; acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex, and full rotation angles. We realized all the shapes that we see everyday in the real world. These are only some of the many reasons why I liked learning about in this unit and it is not that I only liked this unit; it is just that I liked this one better than the other units. So far, this class has been very fun!
